It's time I got serious about a wide-screen TV by trogl 2006-04-12 10:21:46
My current TV is 10 years old, it's already had major service and it's starting to go south.

I'm thinking of buying it today 'cause I'm busy every other day pretty much for the rest of the month/year/century/millenium.

I'm looking at 27" or larger that will do standard wide-screen DVD format.

Much as I like Sony, it's probably out of my range. I've been looking at several Panasonics 'cause my girlfriend was working at the Bay for awhile and that's what they sold (but I wouldn't buy there - overpriced). On a side-by-side comparison at Future Shop, I still liked what I saw and the price wasn't too far off the mark.

My second choice was LG. I've had LG gear in the past and was impressed. The picture seems a bit dimmer than Panasonic's for the same technology but that may be just a matter of adjustment.

I'd also consider Samsung 'cause that's what my previous TV was. They were good about a warranty fix (bad flyback controller chip) and it's seen plenty of abuse and keeps on ticking. It's got to be at least 10 years old so it's had a good life.

I'm still a little confused about which technology is best. I read a print magazine article awhile ago saying that it's still not the right time to buy 'cause new technology's coming out that isn't compatible with the older TV's - you must have a digital video input. I suspect this is another Sony vs everybody else war. I intend to use it primarily to watch DVD's in widescreen and maybe down the road get an HDTV cable box.

I'm trying to keep the price under $CAN 1000 so I can interact it but I suppose I could run to the bank if I can find a CT nearby that's open late.
