Well OK things called tax only took up 25% or so of my income last year. And then the other "it's not a tax" things that the government takes for no benefit to me are atleast another 5% gone.

Of course there is then the 10 random charges and taxes on the phone bill, various taxes that are called surcharges on other bills, sales tax, property tax...

It's time you got used to only being able to spend around half of your pay.

I'm sure one of the founding fathers once joked that if they weren't careful income tax may get out of hand and reach 1%. The tax rate that was the excuse for the revolution was a tiny fraction of what it is these days.

And it's still less in the US than most other countries.
