It wasn't a mindbender for me, and probably not for too many people at UF. We work with numbers and different scales all the time. The folks at the office were totaly stumped. I said "OK, try -2 degrees as the "now" temp." Most said -4. It was a Q on a quiz show on TV. If you say "half as hot" instead of "twice as cold" the question makes a bit more sense, since you're measuring from -273.15 degrees C to 0 degrees. So it would be (-273.15-0)/2 or (-273.15-(-2)/2) in the second example.
