I got the idea from some Jamaicans I met in London, but didn't actually try it until years later when I was destitue, having run up huge debts and spent too much backing the horses (OK so the student loan did cover the riding club _and_ the rent, but it was tight...). It occurred to me that kidney beans were the cheapest source of protein in the supermarket, if only I could bring myself to eat them. A few recipes and a lot of capsaicin later, I had a workable meal that some of my friends even liked.
