when I tell the multi-prestige-classed min-maxer that my straight warrior can thrash his obscenity any day. And then I do it. Most prestige classes force you to give up far more than you get out of it. You might get some marginally useful stuff, but you normally give up feats or spellcasting levels or even Base Attack bonuses. I would rather get that extra level of spells than be able to cast simpler spells a bit more powerfully. At 9th lvl I will get 5th lvl spells, where the person that took any of the prestige classes will likely only get 4th lvl spells. :)
