What a day, what a day. by shorty82 2006-04-02 16:20:57
At 9:30 this morning (7:30 UF time) my cellphone rings. As I didn't go to bed till after 3 am I was still sleeping, not planning on getting up for a few more hours.

It was my aunt, she couldn't get out of her bedroom, the doorknob wouldn't work for some reason and needed my help. So I get dressed quickly and head out to her place, 20 minutes from here. My little 7 year old cousin (aunt's niece) lets me in and I go to my aunt's door to try to get it opened. I took the knob off (the screws were on the outside of the knob) but I wasn't able to make the latch work. I told my aunt to open the window and remove the screen and I grabbed a few tools from my toolbox, grabbed a step-ladder from the garage and climbed in my aunt's window with the intent to pull the hinge pins.

I removed the top hinge pin put the screw driver I was using had gotten stuck so I had to tap the pin back in enough to get the screw driver loose enough to pull it out but not so much the pin got stuck again. I get the bottom pin removed with not much trouble and had my cousin push on that side of the door to get it opened.

I put the door and pins back into place (door open, of course) and removed the latch so the door could be closed with no problems. As I am removing the latch Missy, one of the cats, walks into the room but I didn't think much of it at the time. A few minutes later I remembered I had left the window open and that even though she hasn't gone out in a few years (she's over 20 years old) she used to go out that window (there was a hole in the screen at the time). I was afraid Missy might go out the window into the backyard and when we checked we see her walking across the yard, near the fence. I climb out the window, shoo the dog, and walk up to Missy slowly as not to scare her. I was able to grab her easily, only because of her age she is slow these days, and hand her to my aunt at the window and I then closed the window and put the step-ladder away.

We were all getting hungry and we had some breakfast before heading out to Home Depot, a good 10 minute drive, to get a new door knob. We were there for a little while as we also looked at ceiling fans as my aunt is thinking of getting one for the home office/library, which gets pretty warm due to two computers running in there.

We get back and I put the new doorknob into place and after making sure it works and getting the mess cleaned up my aunt and I needed to trim Missy's claws as they were getting long. As Missy didn't like that idea it took awhile.

We then went over to my grandma's (across the street) to change the batteries in her three smoke detectors. As we only had one 9-volt battery my aunt and I had to make a quick trip to a store right down the road to get some more.

By this time it is getting close to 1:30 and I had to rush back to campus (where I live) so I can get ready for the Theatre Department's presentation of Kiss Me Kate at 2:30 I had a ticket for. I barely had enough time to freshen up a little bit, (I was sweaty as it is warm out today and I have no AC in my van), go bathroom, and put on a clean shirt. Went to that and didn't get back to my room until about 30 minutes ago.

By this time I'm starving as I hadn't had time for lunch so I heated a Stouffer's dinner while I started typing this post. I finished the dinner a few minutes ago.

This is the first time today I've been able to sit down and relax in front of my computer. I was planning on getting up about noon today and start doing research for a speech I have due in a few days but that didn't happen. I need to start the research in a few minutes even though I'd much rather put it off until tomorrow. I just want to sit back and relax, not do school work. Ah, well.

Great! Now Open Office is acting up! It gives me some kind of error when I try to open it. I have no idea what the error is as it is in German. I guess I now have to backup my history and bookmarks and reboot the Knoppix boot CD I'm using due to mobo problems I've had for a while now. I was wanting to use the spell checker to check this post as it is so long. Guess I'll have to use Gmail's checker. Ahh, good. The very few mistakes there were are fixed.
