The state proficiency tests DO include science, so while there are some parents who *protest* teaching evolution, they usually can't do much about it. Science is core curriculum. Biology would include that, but it's too much of a can of worms to make every student sit through sex ed "A Clockwork Orange" style if their parents object.

Mine DID object. Mom's a social worker, has counseled pregnant teens. She gave me and brother The Talk early, often and explicit. In her opinion, the angle taught by the school was way too...optimistic. But she DID teach us the birds and the bees and whatnot. It irks me the parents who'll yank their kids out of class and then not teach them ANYTHING. Dad is a pharmacist, so I got the full run-down of side effects and "issues" of various contraceptive methods from him, too.

I'm 25 years old, no pregnancy scares. Just because you're raised religious does not mean you've been raised ignorant.
