I have a 10base5-to-10baseT adapter connected to my Amiga's A2065 Ethernet card. The NIC responds to diagnostics just fine. The network cable is just fine -- it gives a connection on the Windows system right next to it. But I get no connection, and no blinkies on the adapter. All dead LEDs. The fact that it's an Amiga aside, the hardware issues are still fairly generic.
Now, I am thinking it's my fault, because, well, the part of the adapter that connects to the NIC was kind of old, and bent into a more-or-less rounded rectangle instead of the rounded trapezoid that it's supposed to be. And in the dimness of behind the computer, I did manage to plug it in upside down once. No magic blue smoke escaped, but that's not always necessary to damage a component.
What are the likelihoods involved here? Did I just blow the adapter, by letting voltage run down the wrong pin? Am I going to have to find some other 10base5/10baseT adapter? (Or 10base2/10baseT adapter, the NIC has a coax port as well.) It doesn't seem very likely that I've ground-shorted something in the NIC by mis-connecting the adapter, but what do you folks think? |
