I dunno...my thoughts on the subject are probably best expressed in terms of probability/game theory. Expected value. Done right, the chances of loss are small (in theory; "perfect use" failure rate and real-world failure rate differ), the potential losses if you DO "lose" are such that it's not really worth taking the risk until you can minimally deal with the consequences yourself.
Any moron can screw. Mature gonads do not make you an adult. Nature seems more preoccupied with quantity over quality, and our impulses seem to ensure that.
MOST teenagers do not think far enough ahead to the consequences and how they, personally would deal with them. Because they do not think of the consequences, (or think it won't happen to them), they are less likely to use the precautions available to them, regardless of how open those options are. This lack of concern for future consequences is one of the differences between a child and an adult (theoretically).
This is part of the reason why we have statutory rape laws and other rules that the TLP is running afoul of. An older teen or young adult is usually better able to pressure or wheedle a younger one into compromising situations. I am a big proponent of individual responsibility, but the LAW has to take into account the capabilities of the majority of people of that age/station. |
