Oh Great Uficle, backup ideas/experience required by uplatecoding 2006-03-31 10:25:49
I need some suggestions here for backups (media & general solutions).

Small company with limited funds and we're looking at implementing a new backup strategy (old one has issues, lets just leave it at that.)

We don't have the $ for a robotic drive, but at the same time there is some reluctance to use a single tape drive system (I don't know all the reasons).

Mostly a windows network, with the Linux servers we have doing a Dump to the Windows boxes as required.

One solution that's been suggested, is to use 5x200GB HD's in a USB enclosure as the storage media, and via scripts copy files to be backed up to the HD for the current week, rotating the drives on a weekly basis. Rotating at least 1 Offsite, just in case. (Using some encrypted FS on the USB drives).

Just curious if anyone's had experience using this as a solution and what pitfalls you may have run into. Or if anyone can recommend a solution that may be in the ~$1000CDN

Thanks in advance
