the START command, but I'm not sure which parm to use.

Try putting START in front of each line. If that doesn't do it, then try START /B instead.

Actually, it looks like just START will do it. I created a test.bat file that launched notepad twice. Without using START, I got the same behaviour you did; it waited until the first instance was closed before launching the second instance. By adding START, it launched them both at the same time, and then closed by batch file.
