I think the point of the living will is so the person who writes it can have *their* wishes fulfilled instead of letting others (like you) carry out what you want to do.

What if you want to die but your wife keeps you alive for 20 years, but you can't tell her because you're brain dead? Or, exactly in your GF's situation, you want to die, and your wife knows it, but your children and grandchildren want you kept alive? Wouldn't you like them to respect your wishes, or at least make those wishes known? Aww nevermind. This is all just gonna get rehashed.
