The US has significant numbers of Christians from denominations that denounce alcohol. In certain states in the US, you cannot buy alcohol in the grocery store on Sunday. It's the same idiots who pushed through Prohibition right before the Great Depression.

The US has a screwy view on alcohol- but since public transportation is nearly nonexistent, they want people to be older than the age of majority before allowed to drink in public or buy their own. The drinking age used to be 18 about 35 years back, but they changed it.
