The spouse wanted her to die, and the government sided with him.

The other side was that her parents wanted her to live, were actively involved with her on a daily basis, etc.

The husband had been with another woman for several years and just wanted to move on. She was no longer a part of his daily life.

Another angle to this case is that a local judge was able to override the will of both the executive and legislative branches of the Federal government, basically sending the signal that the judical branch can do whatever the heck it wants.
