What's so bad about first person perspective for CRPGs? The only negative example you gave was Morrowind (which I agree with - I didn't like Morrowind at all), but I don't see how the perspective itself is a bad thing.
Betrayal at Krondor was a pretty awesome CRPG. The Elder Scrolls game before Morrowind (Daggerfall, I think?) was very impressive for its time. Arx Fatalis wasn't fantastic but wasn't awful by any stretch... the Wizardry games were good, some of the Might and Magic games weren't bad, and Deus Ex... oh, Deus Ex. Can we ever say enough good things about Deus Ex?
Anyhow. You might not've liked (or played) all those, but I still think it's kind of unfair to count the perspective itself is a strike against a first person CRPG... as far as I can see all you get is a tradeoff between the strategy of managing a party (which the BG games excel at) and immersion (which the BG games have to make up for with admittedly excellent storytelling).
As I said, though, I didn't like Morrowind at all either. Just couldn't get into it. Oblivion is about 80 times better. If they do release a demo or you get to play it on a friend's system, I really recommend giving it a shot. :) |
