I've got an Ibanez mic here that seems to do a good job, and that only cost me around $100AU a few years back. Plus, if you get a decent mic, then you can get a stand and position yourself so you're as comfortable as possible while you're singing - if you're still sitting down while you record yourself, then that may not be helping either...
