Subcutaneous bruising can easily pinpoint whether it occurred before or after death. Bruises form differently (if at all) after someone has died.

And unless they were already dead, bruises will have formed. They may not ever become visible, but they will be there and can be found by a medical examiner - it doesn't matter how 'gentle' the other person may have been.

*sigh* Just one more thing I Didn't Need To Know, brought to you courtesy of a crime scene / forensics handbook that my mom gave me years ago (she used to be a police officer).
