this case "crushing their entire civilization" and "shock to their culture" are one in the same. Their civilization and culture were one in the same in this instance. If you look at the warior culture and the stratification of the Japanese society before WWII and the way it is now you can not honestly believe that would have happenened if the united states and several entrpeneurs from the U.S. not TOTALLY restructured their society. Japanm is the industrial powerhouse it is today because several American entrepenurs went there and used ideas that were laughed at in the U.S. to great effect. At the time Japan had nothing to lose and adopted them wholeheartedly.

Even today Japan is not allowed a standing military, they have a "self defense force" their current legal structure is almost totally based off of British and U.S. structures.

Since you have nothing in your diary I have no idea of what your background is to base a discussion on other than to say this. Talk to someone who is from Japan that was from the 1940's time period and what the Japanese view of the world was and I think you will find that their whole culture/civilization was crushed and rebuilt almost from scratch right after WWII. having had relatives that were in WWII in both Europe and Asia and having several friends who travel to or even live in Japan or know people who live there it is an amazing thing to talk to them and realize how much the U.S. changed that country after WWII.
