>Golden retrievers are considered one of the top three breeds for trainability.

Most emphatically, trainability != intelligence. Border collies are frequent rescue dogs because they are *too* darned intelligent, and suburbanites who think they can leave one to lay around the house all day being generically doggy have another think coming. The darn beasts are in there re-engineering the house to suit. I have seen a border collie's idea of how couches should be made. Nevermind what they can do to backyard fences and screen doors. People who put their border collies in competitive obedience and agility are acting in sheer self-defense.

The reason Goldens are so trainable is *not* because of their intelligence, which is spotty. A competitive obedience trainer of considerable repute is on record saying that a trainer's best bet is specifically "a dumb Golden." The reason they are so trainable is their eagerness to please. It can take them a while to figure out what on earth bizarre thing this two-foot is asking them to do, but once they get it, by golly they'll get it good and not let go, because they are just so thrilled to have this lovely opportunity to do something which will cause their two-foot to pat them and say "Good girl!"
