                            Japan's surrender by vdp2006-11-19 12:55:59
Do you understand that the only reason Japan by classic_jon 2006-03-30 15:40:11
surrendered was because they had been shown that they could be utterly destroyed without ever having come into face to face combat with there foes? They were training civilians to fight any invasions with sticks and pitchforks. They did not surrender until a SECOND atomic bomb was dropped.

Their culture was shown that there was no way to win and in the japanese culture that understood strength that was a strength that they could not defeat and it removed their manpower advantage totally. In Hirohito's address he COULD NOT admit total defeat to save face for both himself and his country. Heck, even if I was put into that situation I would try to put the best light on it I could....wouldn't you!

In doing so and the American people who went over there to help rebuild their *entire culture* changed almost overnight in historic terms. I believe that was what DR66 meant by his statement. In essense their culture was crused because it changed very dramatically in an incredibly short period of time.

You are correct about quite a bit human rights, high regards for science, education and arts, etc. but without the shock to their culture and the changes forced upon them because of it those changes would not have happened for a long long time if ever.
