Japan's change was not brought upon by completely crushing the entire civilization. Here is a link which has Hirohito's address to the nation - he was not admitting anything, not even defeat.

Japan's change, IMHO, was brought by carefully using its culture and emphasizing the traits that can be considered universally positive: human rights, high regards for science, education and arts, etc. This should be the way any foreign culture is approached, but it takes time, effort, and a lot of careful thought behind it.
