I've been there and made friends there. This is what they have told me it will take.

Japan's change was brought about by completely crushing their entire civilization. The Emperor was thought to be a god. It was only when he publicly admitted that he wasn't that things began to change. Even then things weren't easy as many Japanese comitted suicide upon hearing the Emperor's revelation. (link)

The only equivalent that would bring about change in the middle east would be for muhammed(sp?) to admit he wasn't a prophet, and that's not likely to happen.
