...is that serious reform can be difficult. We just have a pendulum that keeps us from swinging too far to either extreme (theoretically). But the cost to run even for a seat in the state legislature is prohibitive to most "average Joes," much less a seat in the House (which was never meant for career politicians but there you go). Therefore, whichever "side" you pick, you can't make it much higher than county dogcatcher unless you are part of the "establishment." The Douglas Adams view of politics- the people who DESIRE high office are precisely the wrong people who should be occupying the seat of power. In countries with a multi-party system, it seems a bit easier to shake things up.
