It's *because* gov't is so corrupt that I don't trust their attempts to "help" anyone. Any "help" given is done out of political expediency, not morality. NEVER trust the gov't to do the 'right' thing. You'll be disappointed the majority of the time.

There are those who are truly not able to care for themselves, and extending help to them is right and proper. There are also plenty of people able to work, but would rather not if they can help it. Drawing that line is another difficult issue.

The extent that a people should cast a social safety net is another (long, involved, flamefest) sort of thread, and subject to one's own personal philosophy.

What happened in New Orleans was a tragedy, no mistake- compounded by government ineptitude and red tape at various levels. Scum floats to the top. Such scum finds more job security in keeping a certain class ignorant and beholden to government handouts. IMO, basing your power structure on preserving that status quo is lower than low. But to play the race card is a truly cheap shot- especially from a "subculture" who might call someone's efforts to rise "selling out." To me it's more productive to aim your anger at poverty in general, rather than race-bait. But getting "a pass" is much easier than earing your way honestly.

Forgive my cynicism. But if you listen enough to Jesse Jackson and their ilk, you'd have the same jaundiced view.
