The British Empire made some mistakes way, way back.
We created most of the countries in the middle east in the sincere belief that we were doing the right thing, but with the benefit of hindsight, we actually made a bad situation worse.

And the current situation in Iraq is not helping either.

Incidentally, the only way a 'War on Terror' can be won is when you can convince the general populous that the 'infidel/occupying force' isn't bad, and get the terrorists around a table.
We made some serious mistakes in Northern Ireland before we figured that out, and the USA is repeating most of them.

Not to mention that USA citizens supported the IRA for many years.
