Check your own facts. Intelligence assets placed in Iraq specifically to try to find ANY evidence of WMD programs failed to find any evidence. Saddam was blustering in order to appear strong and keep Iran off of his patootie. When time came to put up or shut up, he allowed the inspectors full access. Other recent memos have come to light -- confirmed memos, mind you -- that ascribe a "damned if you do, damned if you don't" policy to set up Saddam for toppling. The idea was, refusing to show where he had the WMDs would be used as evidence that he was concealing them from the UN and the IAEA, and then to support military action. On the other hand, if he *did* have WMDs, then that would have been used to support military action.
Or, to put it another way, I say I know you are growing pot in your basement. I send people in to check your basement, and they don't find any pot. I show that you have bought light bulbs, and that you have water service, both of which are necessary to grow pot, and that there are no pot plants in your basement just means that you moved them when my people came in to inspect. So I invoke the RICO statute anyway and seize your property. On the other hand, if I *do* find pot, that's just that much easier for me to invoke RICO. |
