Iraq, before the current war, was one of the most promising candidates for an arabic country to move closer to the west. The religios nuts had far less influence than they have now, the standard of living (for a large portion of the population) was fairly high. There were still some severe problems, but I seriously think another ten or twenty years would have brought about a peaceful change.
