"US sent tons of money and forces so quickly to the scene left by the tsunami" <rant> I remember a criticism of the US GOVERNMENT not contributing "enough" to tsunami aid, but scads of private donations came out of the US. With Katrina, there were some legal/procedural issues as to why help didn't come on a Domino's delivery schedule. New Orleans can also be held up as one of the rotten points of our welfare state. Warehousing the poor breeds violence, and endemic corruption in the "chocolate city" the city fathers held so dear contributed to the mismanagement of funds for years. Folks whose view is that the government owes them a living are those least likely to take minimal precautions for themselves. If minorities want to "stand up for themselves," look around with open eyes- sometimes the people cheating you happen to be the same color. "Blame Whitey" is simplistic, feels good, and avoids all those uncomfortable concepts of responsibility. </rant>
