These days if cost is an issue go with b, it will be the cheapest. Otherwise go with b/g, just about any g system will also support b.
a does have a few advantages but unless you have very specific requirments probably isn't worth the extra cost. The ultimate solution would be an a/b/g system (until the next standard comes out) but again unless you have some specific requirment then it's not worth the extra cost.

I've used Dlink, netgear and linksys and not had any issues with any of them. I'll typically avoid any proprietary "Speed booster" type technology and just go with the standard so that brand isn't an issue when adding new equipment.
