Linksys 109.99 and D-Link 86.95 on a quickie price look.
While I am sure you can find them cheaper somewhere (I paid 39.95 last time I bought a netgear B/G router for a friend), the B/G ones are cheaper as they are more popular.
Another thing to take into account is the availability and cost of 802.11A wireless cards and support for it in laptops as well.
an 802.11A card is 65.99 and an 802.11G card is 23.99 on a quick price lookup.
Also, while having the G available on those routers with 802.11A is good for compatability... doesent having the G totally remove some of the anti-script kiddie/wardeiver benifits that some others were talking about?
I seriously like 802.11A for many reasons but bang for your buck is not one of them. Also, if a hacker wants into your system he will hack it most likely through the broadband connection and not through even a lightly secured WAP. Hackers are (generally) lazy and will look for the weakest point they can find and exploit it instead of banging their head against a well secured WAP A/B/ or G. Big picture, A is nice but more expensive and if cost doesent phase you and the benifits are worth it ...go with 802.11A. |
