Open a terminal window and type in it "man xrandr" xrander should allow some switching on the fly afik. I have my default screen in gentoo as 1024x768x32@75 (the 75 is due to the monitor not my video card) I don't play much games but I play most I've installed just fine not once having a problem with rendering. I have xgalaga, gnome games, teg, wormux, pysol, twindistress, pathological, geweled, crack-attack, and mindless automaton.
