Win 2K questions (Please, no Linux comments) by klaranth2006-03-30 03:25:12

I would physically swap master/slave - sorry - comrade/comrade (C/D), assuming drives are of similar performance, NOT connect D: - i.e. the old C: and do a clean install up to SP4.

Next one is a judgement call: do you load AV and anti-spyware before or after you load drivers? Some antivirus and antispyware will block important registry changes required by the driver and cause it not to function properly. So you have to disable it - but be careful - driver CDs have been known to load malware or be infected with viruses.

After drivers, AV and AS connect to the net and do your Liveupdate. Reconnect D: and recover/move data. Obviously any software installed on the old C: (now D:) probably not work - so have your oringinal CDs handy ;)

Note: IIRC Win2K will leave the CD ROM as D: and when you connect the second drive Win2K will label it E: - unlike Win98. You can reassign drive letters through Computer Management in the Control Panel.

It's also useful to "harvest" the drivers from your current setup. See driverguide full-stop com for a free tool. Obviously the originals that came with the product are best and there is usually a clicky on the CD for updates.

If you have suspicions of malware/viruses do not connect the old C: until lastest AV is installed. Do a full scan before you copy anything.
