Basically, I would look at what religion the child was baptized in (or whatever the term would be if other religions have different terms than baptize). If the child was baptized as a Catholic, then my ruling would be in the best interests of the Catholic upbringing of the child.

So basically, if the guy is atheist and the woman is Catholic, and they baptized their child in the Catholic church, then that child is going to the mother on Sundays.
