... but I can't help but wonder... what would be the reaction if the headlines read "Elderly victims die because local sheriff commandeers another community's ice"?

Bit then, we get back to the basic problem: we as a nation should have been prepared so that people like that sheriff shouldn't have to make drastic decisions with little information.
