Speaking of cops... by imperito2006-03-24 09:54:08
One has to be careful. by shorty82 2006-03-24 10:21:30
A student at my uni was pulled over and raped last week by a "man" (real men don't rape) who had a flashing light in his truck, a badge, a police-style radio, handcuffs, and a gun.

The Sheriff's department is reccomending that if you are unsure that someone is trying to pull you over is a cop that you call 911 and verify it is a real officer before stopping.

I personally would also check their police ID in addition to their badge and if I am unsure call the police and verify they are who they say they are.

A while back when I still worked for Housing at my front desk a man in plain clothes came into the building and said he was a detective with the University Police Department and needed to see a resident.

He showed me his badge but I also asked to see his ID. I let him by after that but if I was still in doubt I would have called the UPD to verify who he was. I didn't feel a need to partly because he had used either a uni ID card or a key to get into the building. The outside entrances are locked 24/7 and have card swipes for access. Only upper-Housing staff, Maintanence, and the PD have keys for the outside doors.

If somebody comes knocking on my door saying they are police I would ask them to hold their badge and ID up to the peephole and if in doubt would call the UPD to make sure they are real police before letting them into my room.
