From my past readings, I remember the basic fact that mirroring (RAID 1) is a good compromise for performance if storage efficiency is not the primary consideration. RAID 5, while costing less storage overhead, will be substantially less efficient on writes, since all disks in the array are hit on any write operation. Read the articles for in-depth info...
