"Miss L" asked me to post this for her. It's too long for one post so I'm breaking it into two posts.

Researchers Discover Mind over Matter

Researchers at Infinity Research Ltd. have proved that the human mind really does have power over matter, or at least the body. They have applied for government approval to commence Phase II clinical trials for their miracle cure.

"It was while we were studying the placebo effect," Project Manager Dr. Mel Noonian explained, "There has been plenty of evidence that the mind can do strange and wonderful things for the body, hypnosis for example. This just takes it one step farther."

One step farther is, essentially, writing computer programs for the body -- programs that are installed in the brain instead of on your hard drive. However, where hypnosis can help a person loose weight or stop smoking, Dr. Noonian's process can make a severed spine heal or re-grow lost limbs...

Letters to the Editor

About the mind over matter thing yesterday. I always said doctors are useless. Look how long it's taken them to figure out that it's a guy's own fault if he gets sick, and he's gotta be the one to make himself healthful again.
Billy R.

It's truly amazing how much we continue to learn about the body and the human mind. 100 years ago, space travel was impossible. 50 years ago, we believed nuclear energy was deadly. 2 days ago, paraplegics could never walk again. Is there any limit to what we can do?
Albert K.

While I believe that the government's reaction to Dr. Noonian's discovery is extreme, I agree that there is great potential for this technology (like any great advance) to be abused. Being beautiful or exceptionally fit will no longer be a matter of genetics or exercise, but rather of downloading a program.
Franny A.

Now that Big Brother's taken control of Dr. Noonian's technology, what's to stop them from installing programs in us at school? Programs that will make us docile, easy to control, and all the same. The government doesn't want free-thinking individuals; it wants sheeple who vote the way it tells them to, buys the way Big Buisness wants them to, and does the things they're told to do.
Dave H.
