They were both born in an Irish community in Quebec north of Hull (which has since been ethnically cleansed by the Language Police). My father died years ago, but it's still easy to get Mom revved up about the English and the "Hunger" (the potato famine of the 1840s). They got married just after WW2 - Mom had to get the Catholic Bishop's approval to marry the heathen.

So I've got uncles who are Knights of Columbus, uncles who are in the Masonic Lodge and an aunt who's a nun. It's all great fun, really.

I now live 3000 miles away, on the BC coast.
