No problems with that at all in Arch (archlinux.org)
As root, simply "pacman -Syu"
With these options, pacman will automatically retrieve the current master package list and do a full system upgrade to the latest packages with all dependencies being automagically resolved.
If a package installs more things than you want, simply remove the offending bits. For example, Gnome extras loaded Evolution, so "pacman -R evolution" and it's gone.
