Don't just focus on the Jews. I don't want to minimize the Jewish horror, but there were others who suffered just as badly in many ways.
Find me a Gypsy. Anywhere. As far as I know, the Carolina Parakeet (listed as extinct) has more chance of being found than a Gypsy (by culture, rather than genetics). Many peoples were decimated or wiped out by Hitler, Stalin, Pol Pot (I know he was later, thanks), and many others. As hideous as the Jewish holocaust was, concentrating on it, rather than all that happened then, brings far more risk of repetition.
Concentrating on one aspect marginalizes all the others and brings the risk of people saying "Well, that was an aberration, people in general aren't REALLY that way..."
Israelites vs Canaanites, Romans with many a rebellious province, Teutonic Knights with the Prussian peoples, Genghis Khan (and later khans), Mao Zedong... History is filled with appalling examples of genocide. Go ask the Romans what Spartacus' people got. |
