These Ad Counsel ads that have been cropping up, I believe they're all US-Centric. In the US, it's illegal for anyone under the age of 21 to drink (it used to vary by state, but then the federal government decided to step in and preempt). Many parents (especially on the fundie side, though some just think they're being good parents) strictly prohibit their kids from drinking.
It's the kids who drink before age 15 whose parents had the attitude that drinking was forbidden prior to age 21 who have the tendency toward alcohol problems.
And yes, it's because of all the other stuff you described -- falling to peer pressure, bad family environment, etc. It has less to do with their age and more to do with the escapism or rebellion aspect of it.
The smart thing for parents to do in order to avoid this method of rebellion/escapism that often results in adult alcohol problems, is precisely what your parents did. That's what my parents did as well (though they primarily tried giving me wine, which made them laugh when I'd try to get the taste out of my mouth).
My rebellion, instead, had to be in the form of smoking and hiding it from them. Yeah, much better for me. (and yes, that's sarcasm). But smoking was *absolutely* forbidden. Of age or not. Drinking... my parents let me know that drinking in moderation was OK... so I never bothered with it. I'm nearly 30 now and have been drunk maybe once or twice in my life... never had a hangover, even.
Unfortunately, these Ad Counsel ads probably aren't suggesting that the way to prevent this problem is to encourage moderation rather than demand absolute abstinence... as I believe it's this demand is what leads to the later problems. Oh well. |
