"Children who drink before they're 15 are 5 times more likely to have alcohol problems as adults" (paraphrased)
I wonder what external variables are unaccounted for there? I'm betting most children that start drinking before they're 15 do so because of peer pressure, or a bad family environment where alcohol is readily available, etc.
On the other hand, it can work very differently. My parents let me and my siblings try alcohol from (at a guess) about age 13, initially in very small amounts. At age 16, my sister is allowed a standard drink from time to time. In my opinion, at least, this has cultivated a healthy attitude towards alcohol, and _decreased_ the likelihood of alcohol problems in the future. It certainly prevents any sort of "now I can drink" binge.
How many other people here had or are parents with similar views? |
