To float the columns seperately. One left and the other right. You would do that after the main article part and make sure you clear the float after teh articles and before the footer. Wrap all the articles in a single div and movethe background color to that one.

If you want more of a grid layout with the articles then try floating the second article left. Third right. Clear both. then float the next set and clear after.

There are also tricks you can play with negative margins so that you only have to float one set of articles, etc. That is a little uglier in implementation though.
