the first year or so. Unless he gets crazy, that is. Even the Liberal party will want to stay away from an election until they elect a new leader and get settled in.
Eventually, he will have to make some accomodation with the Bloc, in order to get their vote. It will be interesting to see how badly this will hurt him next election. Well, it's either that, or he will not be able to accomodate the West at all. And he really can't afford to alienate his power base.
It is barely possible that he will show himself to be a consummate politician and steer a course between those two alternatives. If he does, I will salute him and likely support him next election. But more likely he will have to do something like Mulroney did with the Meech Lake Accord. |
