Deterrance is a basic point of punishment. by esbita 2006-01-24 09:28:16
If a person has the impulse to do something bad, fear of punishment may stay the hand when moral or common sense considerations don't. He will probably serve as a grim example in many EMT classes on what NOT to do. In his particular case, he deserves some time where he has little else to do but think about what he did.

The other point to punishment, in terms of prison, is to isolate from society to make sure that they don't do it again, which isn't as much the point with this guy because he's not violent.
