Although using "reams" that way IS a carryover to days when a lot more of the written word was printed on paper, rather than on the screen.

In fact, there are a lot of carryovers from the old days. Much of the ruler and tabstop formatting that you see in MS Word was designed to look/work in a similar fashion to the good ol' typewriter. The computer keyboard is also an extension of the common arrangement of keys on the typewriter, even though most kids today have never even seen a typewriter.
