The important thing is crunching, of course. But there are a few ways you can
crunch faster, better, and get more points on the way.
-
The easiest way to boost your points is to increase your computer score. The
way this is calculated is complicated, and involves benchmarking. But by
allowing WCG to use more disc space, you can add about 9 points to your
computer score. The real bonus is, the current projects will never even use
the extra space - so it's points for nothing. Use the device profile to
allocate more space. (This even works if you don't actually have the space
free, but is capped at your disc size. Be aware that future projects may make
bigger demands on your disc space.)
-
If you use a shared computer, but would like WCG to be humming away all the
time, a good way to do this (and stop kids/significant others from messing
with the program) is to run it as a service. This requires a little hacking,
but is well documented.
-
You don't need to use the screensaver. If you switch to the blank screensaver,
WCG will keep chugging away but it won't have to waste time displaying any
graphics.
-
Finally, give your computer a tuneup. WCG will benefit, but so will you. Kill
unnecessary services, clear out the registry, keep a nicely defragged drive.
You know the kind of thing :-)
All this and much more is explained at www.unofficialworldcommunit
ygrid.com. You will find "How To"s on running the UD agent as a service,
migrating to BOINC, and explanations of the points system, hyperthreading
issues, and more.
All in all, much more fun than ploughing through the forums. :-) |
