I'm needing opinions on what kind of system to get by ihavebigpiranha 2005-12-19 21:12:14
A friend of mine is asking me about what she should get for a new pc.

She's not a gamer, so it doesn't need to be hardcore or shiny inside, shiny outside would be a plus to her really.

She's thinking about something off the shelf like a dell or HP or something of the sort.

I've also presented the idea to her to just upgrade the machine she's got now with a new board, cpu, and ram, it would be the cheapest way I think, but it's not really a new computer then and won't have the call-in support and whatnot.

Are there any companies still known for making a good product *AND* supporting it?

I don't want her to get a machine that I'm gonna have to be tech support for, if it will be like that I'll build her something that won't give problems...

Good companies? Good machines?

Think we're in the $1k USD range to get a tower and maybe a monitor.

To be used mainly for emailing/surfing/chatting and possibly watching DVD movies.

My friend will be happy to get some suggestions, I can't give her any since I only build my own machines and don't know really even what companies manufacture systems anymore.

Much thanks in advance.
