I don't have a whole lot of experience with guns having grown up in a gun free household. I know the sounds they make though. I was on a caving trip in VT with outing club folks and we heard some shots while we unloaded gear at the parking spot. It started with a few bangs. "Gee, those sound close." Then I heard this odd whirring sound go by above me. Then the whir followed by cracks (branches snapping about 12 feet up). I dropped down, rolled under the van, and yelled at everyone to "get down, those are bullets". The shooting stopped, we went safely caving, and never did find out who was target shooting without a backstop.
