Merry Christmas vs. Happy Non-Denominational... by Illiad2005-12-19 11:13:08
For some people cross, jesus and christmas by shminux 2005-12-19 11:52:38
awaken all kinds of unpleasant associations, like their ancestors murdered in christ's name. I heard someone say as much as "there is no difference between a cross and a swastika, as far as I'm concerned - both originally meant love and goodness, both are now deep in innocent blood" (I'm paraphrasing here). While this may be an extreme view, it's easy to understand how wishing "a merry christmas" to people like that would not lift their spirit. It doesn't mean one shouldn't - just don't always expect a positive reaction.
